What Size Chandelier Do I Need? The Room & Table Rules

By RugCalc Editorial Team · Last updated: 2026-10-14 · 6 min read

Quick answer: diameter in inches = room length + width in feet (a 12×14 room takes 26 in). Over a dining table, use two-thirds of the table width and hang the bottom 30–36 in above the tabletop.

The room rule

For open spaces with no table beneath — foyers, stair landings, living areas — add the room's length and width in feet; the sum is the chandelier diameter in inches. A 12×14 room: 12 + 14 = a 26-in chandelier. A 16×20 great room: a 36-in fixture.

The table rule

When the chandelier hangs over a dining table, size to the table, not the room: the diameter should be about two-thirds of the table width.

Table widthChandelier diameter
42 in28 in
48 in32 in
54 in36 in
60 in40 in
72 in48 in

When the two rules disagree, the table rule wins — a fixture sized to the room looks enormous over a small table.

Hanging height

Over a table, hang the bottom of the fixture 30–36 in above the tabletop. In open areas, keep it 7 ft above the floor so nobody walks into it. On an 8-ft ceiling a typical chain runs 2–3 ft; add 3 in of drop for every foot of ceiling over 8 ft. Buy the chain 6–12 in longer than you think — shortening it is easy, stretching it isn't.

Worked example: 14×12 dining room, 60-in table, 9-ft ceiling: room rule → 26 in; table rule → 40 in. Choose 40 in, hang 30–36 in above the table, chain ≈ 24 + 3 = 27 in. Confirm with the chandelier size calculator.
