How dining table size is determined
- 24 in of table edge per person — 6 people need 6 × 24 = 144 in of usable edge.
- Rectangle: 36-in-wide table; length = 24 in × people ÷ 2 (both sides) + 24 in for end seats. 6 people → 36×72 in.
- Round: diameter ≈ 30 in + 8 in per extra person beyond 4. 6 people → 48–54 in round.
- Clearances: 36 in walk sides, 24–30 in behind pulled-out chairs — the room needs about 5 ft more each way than the table.
A 36×72 table needs a room roughly 10×12 ft to breathe. If your room is smaller, drop a shape or reduce seating — a tight dining room is miserable for guests.

A 36×72-in table needs roughly 10×12 ft with comfortable clearances. Measure your room before shopping — the table that fits the showroom may not fit your dining room.
Round tables seat more per square foot and leave corner walk space — a 48-in round seats 6 in less floor than a 36×72 rectangle. Rectangles fit walls and formal layouts better.
A 72-in (6-ft) table seats 6 comfortably — 3 per side. Squeeze 8 only with narrow chairs and no place settings at the ends.
Benches tuck under the table and save space — a bench seats 3–4 across where chairs seat 2. Great for kids' ends; keep chairs at the head.
Each leaf adds about 2 seats (24 in of edge). Buy a table with leaves if you host holidays — 6 daily, 10 with both leaves is the classic setup.
