Recommended rug size
How the rug size is calculated
The calculator applies the standard rug-placement rules designers and manufacturers use:
- Bedroom: the rug must extend 18–24 inches past the sides and foot of the bed.
- Living room: the rug should sit so the front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on it, with 18–24 inches of rug visible in front.
- Dining room: the rug must extend at least 24 inches past the table edge on all sides (add 48–60″ to your table dimensions).
- Hallway: leave 4–6 inches of bare floor on each end and side.
The calculator picks the nearest standard rug size (2×3, 4×6, 5×8, 8×10, 9×12, etc.) that meets these rules — those are the sizes you'll actually find in stores. We return both the ideal size and the minimum that still looks right, so you can trade style for budget or room size.

Rug size FAQ
An 8×10 rug is the standard for a queen bed, or 9×12 in a larger room. Either way, extend the rug 18–24 inches past the sides and foot of the bed.
Extend the rug 18–24 inches past the sides and at least 18 inches past the foot. This gives you a place to stand and looks balanced.
Most designers place the rug so it extends past the sides and foot of the bed, with the headboard sitting on (or just off) the rug. A smaller "foot-only" rug (like a 3×5 or 4×6) is an option for tight rooms.
At least 24 inches on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when pushed out. Add 48–60 inches to your table's length and width to find the rug size.
Leave roughly 6–12 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the wall. In very small rooms, 4–6 inches can work.
8×10 (96″×120″) is 80 sq ft and suits a queen bed or a medium living room. 9×12 (108″×144″) is 108 sq ft — 35% larger — and better for king beds, sectionals, or bigger rooms.
