How chandelier size is determined
- By room: diameter (in) = room length (ft) + room width (ft). 12+14 = a 26-in fixture.
- By table: diameter = about 2/3 of the table width. A 60-in table takes a 40-in chandelier.
- Hanging height: bottom of the fixture 30–36 in above a dining table; 7 ft above the floor in open areas.
- Chain: on an 8-ft ceiling a typical chain is 2–3 ft; add 3 in of drop per extra foot of ceiling height.
Use the room rule for foyers and living areas; use the table rule when the chandelier hangs over a table. When the two disagree, the table rule wins — a fixture sized to the room looks enormous over a small table.

Chandelier FAQ
Use one fixture per 2 ft of island — or hang two pendants over a 6-ft island. Mini-pendants usually 6–8 in diameter each, spaced evenly.
Keep the bottom of the chandelier 7 ft above the floor and centered in the sightline from the front door. Let a long chain do the reaching rather than buying taller.
Keep 6–12 in of clearance from the glass and check the swing — door-adjacent fixtures should clear a fully open door swing by at least 6 in.
Over a table, size by the table (2/3 rule). In open spaces with no table, size by the room (add l + w). Mixed spaces: go with the smaller of the two.
Measure the drop from mount to 30–36 in above the table — buy a chain 6–12 in longer than you think and remove links to fine-tune. Chain is easier to shorten than to stretch.
