How Big Should a Dining Table Be? Seats & Room, Solved

Quick answer: give each person 24 in of table edge, then add 36-in walk and 24–30-in chair clearance around the table. Six people want a 36×72-in table in a room of about 10×12 ft.

The 24-in rule

Every seated guest needs 24 inches of table edge — that fits a dinner plate, a glass, and elbows. You can squeeze to 18–20 in with benches or kids, but adults at a holiday dinner will feel it. Multiply your seat count by 24 to get the usable edge, then spread it across the table's sides and ends.

Round tables seat more per square foot: a 48-in round seats 6 in less floor than a 36×72 rectangle. That's why round wins in small rooms.

Does it fit the room?

A table is usable only if the chairs can come out and people can walk. Plan: 36 in of walk space on paths, 24–30 in behind a pulled-out chair. In practice that means the room needs about 5 ft more in every direction than the table — a 36×72 table wants roughly 10×12 ft. Measure the room first, then shop; the showroom floor lies.
