TV Mount Height Calculator — Mount It at Eye Level
Enter your screen size and seated eye height to find the mount height so the screen center sits exactly at eye level. No sign-up, no data stored.
Offset = distance from the bracket holes to the screen center (usually 0–4 in).

How TV mount height is determined
- Screen height: TV diagonal × 0.49 gives the visible screen height (16:9). Half of that is half-screen height.
- Center height = your seated eye height — the screen center should sit at eye level, typically 42–48 in.
- Mount hole height = center height − half-screen height + bracket offset (distance from holes to screen center).
- Over a console: keep the center within 10° above eye level — every foot closer drops the angle tolerance.
A 55-in TV has a 27-in-tall screen, so the bottom edge ends up around 28–32 in above the floor when the center is at 44 in. That's the "not too high" look people expect.
Screen size → distance & typical center
Common living-room setups: distance is 1.5–2.5× the diagonal for 1080p, 1–1.5× for 4K.
| Screen | Screen height | Viewing distance | Typical center |
|---|---|---|---|
| 43 in | 21 in | 6–9 ft | 42–46 in |
| 55 in | 27 in | 8–11 ft | 42–48 in |
| 65 in | 32 in | 9–13 ft | 42–48 in |
| 75 in | 37 in | 10–15 ft | 40–46 in |
| 85 in | 42 in | 12–17 ft | 38–44 in |

TV mounting FAQ
Center at your seated eye height (42–48 in), which puts the bottom edge about 28–32 in above the floor. If it sits above a console, keep the center within 10° of eye level — roughly 4–5 in higher.
Eye-level viewing relaxes the neck and cuts glare from ceiling lights. Cinemas put you slightly below screen center for immersion — eye level or a touch below is the sweet spot.
Sit in your usual spot with your head against the backrest, hold a tape to your temple, and read the height at your eye line. Do it in the actual chair — couches slouch more than office chairs.
Yes when the TV sits more than 10° above eye level (bedroom walls, high consoles) — a tilt reclaims the viewing angle. At proper eye level, a flat or fixed mount looks cleaner.
That mount is 15–25 in too high for comfortable viewing — use a full-motion mount that pulls down for movie nights, and check heat tolerance. It's the exception, not the rule.
