Wall lumber needed
How shed wall lumber is estimated
- Perimeter (ft) = 2 x (length + width).
- Studs = ceil(perimeter x 12 / spacing) + corner extras (4) + 15% for openings & headers.
- Plates = perimeter x 3 (double top + bottom), in linear ft.
- Board feet = (studs x wall height + plates) x 1.33 (nominal 2x4 factor).
- Pieces = ceil(board ft / 5.33) for 8-ft 2x4s.
This covers the wall frame only. The floor (joists + plywood), rafters and siding are separate line items - the calculator gives you the wall studs and plates so you can price the vertical frame and plan the order.
Shed size → wall studs reference
8-ft walls, 16-in spacing, includes corners and 15% for openings.
| Shed size | Perimeter | Studs | 8-ft 2x4s |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8x10 | 36 ft | 35 | ~95 |
| 10x12 | 44 ft | 43 | ~120 |
| 10x16 | 52 ft | 50 | ~140 |
| 12x20 | 64 ft | 61 | ~170 |

Shed lumber FAQ
2x4 studs at 16 in is the standard for sheds up to about 12-ft walls. Use 2x6 for taller " "walls, heavy siding, or in snow-heavy regions where the rafter loads transfer through the walls.
Yes - the bottom plate and skirt board should be pressure-treated where they sit on concrete " "or blocks, and the floor joists near grade too. Untreated lumber on concrete wicks moisture and " "rots from the bottom up.
2x6 rafters at 24 in span most 8-12-ft sheds comfortably; 2x4 works only for narrow roofs. " "Your rafter spacing and roof pitch determine the size - the wall calculator assumes the roof " "load is planned separately.
A 10x12 floor is 120 sq ft - about 4 sheets of 4x8 plywood (120 / 32 = 3.75) plus a little " "for the skirt. Use 3/4-in exterior plywood or OSB rated for subfloor.
Most areas allow sheds under a size threshold (often 120-200 sq ft) without a permit, but " "setback rules always apply. Check your local building department before ordering lumber - " "some counties require plans for any shed with a foundation.
