Plywood Calculator — How Many Sheets Do I Need?

Published: October 14, 2026

Enter your area, sheet size and waste to get the exact number of 4x8 plywood or OSB sheets for floors, walls and roofs. No sign-up, no data stored.

Quick answer: A 20x20 subfloor (400 sq ft) needs about 14 sheets of 4x8 plywood (400 / 32 = 12.5, +10% waste).

How plywood sheet count is estimated

Panels are sold as full sheets only, so always round up. If your area divides evenly but the room has a bay window or a chimney chase, the waste percentage - not the raw area - is what saves you a second trip to the lumberyard.

Worked example: A 20x20 subfloor = 400 sq ft. With 4x8 sheets: 400 / 32 = 12.5, so 13 net. Adding 10% waste: 13 x 1.10 = 14.3, round up to 15 sheets. A 4x10 option: 400 / 40 = 10, +10% = 11 sheets.

Plywood FAQ

Do I count the openings (doors, windows)?

For sheathing, no - subtract large openings only if they span a full sheet. In practice the studs around openings use up the offcuts, so most framers order full area plus waste and keep the cutoffs for blocking.

Can I mix OSB and plywood?

You can on walls and roof decks if the thickness matches, but keep subfloors consistent - mixed panels can telegraph tiny height differences at seams. Check your local code for required exposure ratings.

How should I stagger plywood seams?

Offset end joints by at least 2 ft between adjacent rows and leave a 1/8-in gap at all panel edges for expansion. Staggered seams are what keep a floor from becoming a single crack line.

What grade should I buy?

For construction, CDX or OSB is standard (one good face, one rough). If the panel will be a visible ceiling or wall, switch to sanded grades like BC or AC. Marine-grade is overkill unless truly exposed.

Why does the store quote full sheets when my math says 12.5?

Because you cannot buy half a sheet and ripping reduces usable area. Lumberyards price by full panels, and the extra 10-15% is cheaper than a second delivery or a patch seam.
