How LVP quantity is estimated

The waste allowance is not a rip-off - it is end cuts, wall wobbles, and a few spare planks for repairs. Dye lots change between production runs, so buying one extra box up front beats trying to match color later.

Worked example: A 12x14 room = 168 sq ft. With 10% waste: 168 x 1.10 = 184.8 sq ft. At 20 sq ft per box: 184.8 / 20 = 9.24, round up to 10 boxes. You will have about 15 sq ft left over for spares and repairs.

LVP FAQ

Why do I need extra LVP beyond the room size?

You waste planks on end cuts, doorways and walls that are not perfectly square - 10% is the standard allowance. Staggering seams adds waste too, and you want a few spare planks for future repairs since dye lots vary.

How many square feet are in a box of LVP?

Most LVP boxes cover 20-25 sq ft, but it varies by brand and plank size - a 6-in x 48-in plank usually packs 20 sq ft per box. Always check the box label; our calculator lets you enter the exact coverage.

Should I include stairs in my LVP area?

Yes - count stair treads and risers separately. A standard 36-in stair tread is about 3.5 sq ft and a riser about 2.2 sq ft. Nose caps (stair edges) are usually sold per piece and add cost beyond area.

How do I measure an oddly shaped room?

Break it into rectangles, measure each, and add them together - that is the area our calculator starts from. Add the 10% waste on top of the total, and round up to the next full box.

Can I return unopened LVP boxes?

Most big-box stores accept unopened boxes within 30-90 days, but dye lots change, so over-buying by one box is safer than scrambling to match later. Keep the receipt and check the store's return window.
