Flooring & Rug Calculators

Two questions decide your order: how much material (with waste) and what size rug fits the room. Both are pure measurement math — and both are what these tools solve in US units.

Ordering the right amount: waste is not optional

Flooring is almost never a clean room area ÷ coverage number. You cut boards at walls, doors and seams; carpet needs pattern matching; tile needs extra for corners and breakage. A straight plank layout needs about 10% waste, diagonal or herringbone tile 15% or more, and carpet 10–15% once seams are included. Round up, and buy a full extra box where you can — partial boxes usually can't be returned.

Hardwood, LVP, tile or carpet?

Your hardwood vs. laminate vs. vinyl choice is about budget and moisture, but the math is the same: measure the room, add waste, divide by each box's coverage. Laminate and LVP often have different box sizes, so always check the square footage printed on the box rather than assuming.

Sizing an area rug, not just flooring

An area rug sits on top of your floor, so its sizing follows placement rules, not area: leave 18–24 in of rug around a bed, set the front legs of living-room furniture on the rug (rug 6–8 in from the wall), and leave ~24 in beyond a dining table. The rug calculator applies these rules to your room automatically.
