How drywall mud is calculated

Ceilings and long walls eat more mud because of more joints and angles. Add 10–15% for waste on textured ceilings or rooms with many corners. For a whole-house job, professional estimators usually figure 1 bucket per 200 sq ft per coat and buy one extra bucket for touch-ups.

Worked example: A 384-sq-ft room with 3 coats at 200 sq ft per 5-gal bucket: 384 × 3 ÷ 200 = 5.8 buckets of coverage, so buy 2–3 five-gallon buckets (6 buckets covers it, 4–5 is typical with experience). Tape: 384 ÷ 350 ≈ 1.1, so 2 rolls.

Drywall mud FAQ

How much drywall mud do I need for 100 square feet?

About half a 5-gallon bucket per coat — a 5-gal tub covers roughly 200 sq ft per coat, so 100 sq ft with 3 coats needs about 1.5 buckets (0.75–1 bucket is typical with experience).

How many coats of mud on new drywall?

Three coats is the standard: a bedding coat over the tape, a second skim, and a light final feather coat. Two coats are enough for small patches, but new seams will show through with only two.

How much drywall tape do I need?

About 1 roll of 250-ft tape per 300–400 sq ft of drywall. A 12×12 room needs 2 rolls; a 1,500-sq-ft house needs 12–15 rolls. Paper tape is cheapest; mesh tape is faster but less strong on flat joints.

How much mud for a 12x12 room?

A 12×12 room with 8-ft walls has about 384 sq ft of wall. At 200 sq ft per bucket per coat with 3 coats, plan on 4–5 five-gallon buckets of coverage — buy 4 and grab a fifth if you run out.

Bucket vs bag drywall compound?

Buckets are pre-mixed and ready to use (54 lbs wet, ~$12–18); bags are powder you mix (~$10–14 per 18-lb bag) and go further. Use buckets for small jobs and touch-ups, bags for whole rooms or houses.
