How curtain panel count is estimated

Fullness is about how much fabric bunches along the rod - 1.5x barely drapes, 2x is the classic " "look for most homes, and 2.5x reads formal. Grommet and back-tab panels hang with less fullness; " "pinch pleats and pencil pleats eat fabric fast.

Worked example: A 72-in rod at 2x fullness: fabric = 144 in. With 54-in panels: 144 / 54 = 2.7, so 3 panels exact, rounded to an even pair = 4 panels (2 per side).

Curtain panel FAQ

How long should curtains hang?

Floor-length (1/2 in above the floor) is the modern standard; sill-length reads casual. Mount " "the rod 4-6 in above the frame so panels look taller - the calculator covers width only, so pair " "it with your preferred drop when ordering.

Do curtains need to touch when closed?

For privacy and light control, yes - panels should overlap by 2-4 in in the center. The " "calculator's 2x fullness gives that overlap naturally; 1.5x may leave a gap on a windy rod.

What rod height is best?

Halfway between the window frame and the ceiling, or 6-8 in above the frame - whichever is " "higher. Short windows look taller with a high rod; the extra wall between rod and frame is the " "secret of designer-looking windows.

Should panels match the wall or contrast?

Sheer whites and warm neutrals frame the window without competing; deep colors make the window " "a feature. For pattern, keep it to one wall per room - busy print on every wall gets noisy fast.

Do I need blackout lining?

Bedrooms and media rooms - yes. Blackout lining adds a layer and cost per panel, so count it " "into the price of each panel you order. Light-filtering is a cheaper middle ground for living rooms.
