Mulch Depth & Volume: How Much to Buy
Quick answer: aim for 2–3 inches of mulch in beds. To buy the right amount, multiply area by depth, divide by 324 for cubic yards, or by 27 for cubic feet then into bags.

Right depth
The sweet spot is 2–3 inches across a bed. One inch is too thin to block weeds or hold moisture, and 4+ inches can smother roots and trap too much water. Around trees, keep mulch a couple of inches back from the trunk — the classic "volcano" of mulch piled on the bark rots it.
Area to volume
Mulch is sold by volume, so convert your bed's square footage to cubic feet or yards. Formula: area (sq ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12 = cubic feet, then ÷ 27 = cubic yards. A 200-sq-ft bed at 3 in = 50 cu ft ≈ 1.9 cu yd.
Yards vs bags
Most bags hold 2 cu ft, so a cubic yard (27 cu ft) is about 13.5 bags. A 3-cu-ft bag is 9 bags per yard. For beds over ~1 cubic yard, bulk by the yard is usually cheaper; bags win only for small spot jobs where convenience matters.
Depth chart
| Bed area | 2-in deep | 3-in deep |
|---|---|---|
| 50 sq ft | 8.3 cu ft / 0.31 yd | 12.5 / 0.46 yd |
| 100 sq ft | 16.7 / 0.62 yd | 25 / 0.93 yd |
| 200 sq ft | 33.3 / 1.23 yd | 50 / 1.85 yd |
| 500 sq ft | 83.3 / 3.09 yd | 125 / 4.63 yd |
Add ~5% for settling and leveling over the season.
Worked example
A 150-sq-ft bed at 3 inches:
- Volume: 150 × 3 ÷ 12 = 37.5 cu ft
- Cubic yards: 37.5 ÷ 27 ≈ 1.4 cu yd
- 2-cu-ft bags: 37.5 ÷ 2 ≈ 19 bags
The mulch calculator converts between all three units instantly.
Common mistakes
- Ordering by area, not volume. You buy volume.
- Too deep. 4+ inches smothers plants.
- Piling against tree trunks. Rots the bark.
- Forgetting settling. Mulch compacts 5–10%.
FAQ
Mulch should be 2-3 inches deep in most flower beds and around trees. 1 inch is too thin to control weeds, and 4+ inches can smother roots and hold too much moisture.
Multiply the bed area in square feet by the depth in inches, divide by 324 for cubic yards. A 200-sq-ft bed at 3 inches needs about 1.9 cubic yards of mulch.
Mulch is sold in 2-cubic-foot bags, so a cubic yard (27 cu ft) equals about 13.5 bags. A 3-cubic-foot bag equals 9 bags per yard.
Bulk mulch by the cubic yard is usually cheaper per volume for beds over roughly 1 cubic yard. Bagged mulch is convenient for small areas but carries a premium.
