Walls & Ceiling Calculators
Walls and ceilings are where most repaint and remodel budgets get miscalculated. The fix is to treat every surface as an area: drywall in 32 sq ft sheets, paint by gallons per coat, wallpaper by rolls, tile by the piece — and count the ceiling separately.
Measure walls as area, not perimeter
Start with the actual wall surface: 2 × (length + width) × wall height. For a 12×12 room with 8 ft ceilings that's about 384 sq ft of wall — before you subtract the door and window. Never estimate a room "by feel": a 12×12 room takes a very different amount of paint than a 15×20 room, even though both are "bedrooms".
Ceiling is a separate surface
The ceiling is length × width on its own, and it usually wants a different finish than the walls. Add it as its own area — painters cover a ceiling in ~3–4 hours of work but it's a distinct material quantity. Many budgets run short precisely because the ceiling was folded into "wall" math.
Drywall first, then the finish
On a remodel, drywall goes up before paint or wallpaper: a 4×8 sheet is 32 sq ft, and you plan sheets across studs with ~10% for cutting. Once the surface is up, the finish layer is a coverage question — gallons for paint, rolls with pattern repeat for wallpaper, tile count with waste for a tile wall.
