Quick answer: A 30×40-ft one-story house (140-ft perimeter, 8-ft walls, 200 sq ft of openings) needs about 11 squares with waste: (140 × 8 − 200) × 1.1 ÷ 100 ≈ 10.1 → 11 squares.

How siding is calculated

For a two-story house, measure each floor's perimeter separately or multiply by the full height if the walls run straight through. Vinyl and fiber cement come in fixed-length panels, so corner and window cuts create real waste — round up to the next full square and buy one extra square for repairs.

Worked example: A 140-ft perimeter with 8-ft walls and 200 sq ft of openings: 140 × 8 = 1120 − 200 = 920 sq ft; at 10% waste that's 1012 sq ft ÷ 100 = 10.1, so order 11 squares.

Siding FAQ

How many squares of siding do I need for a 2000 square foot house?

About 22–25 squares for a single-story 2,000-sq-ft house including gables and waste. Squares measure wall area, not floor area — use perimeter × height, subtract openings, add 10–15%.

What is a square of siding?

One square is 100 square feet of coverage — the standard unit siding is sold and priced in. A 12-sq order covers 1,200 sq ft of wall.

How much siding waste should I add?

10% for a simple rectangle, 15–20% for gables, dormers, corners and custom cuts. Fixed-length panels mean corner and window cuts always leave scraps.

How do I measure siding on a house?

Multiply the exterior perimeter by the wall height, subtract doors and windows (about 15–20 sq ft each), add gable areas, then apply the waste factor. Measure at the foundation line.

Vinyl vs fiber cement siding — same coverage?

Yes, both are sold by the square (100 sq ft), so the quantity math is identical. Fiber cement costs 2–3× vinyl but lasts decades longer; vinyl is cheaper, lighter and faster to install.
