Closet storage
How closet storage is calculated
- Shelf area = closet width à shelf depth à number of shelves (depth converted to feet).
- Rod length = closet width for a single rod, or width à 2 for a double rod layout.
- Per person = rod and shelf totals divided by the people sharing the closet.
- Planning targets: 3â4 ft of rod per person, 12-in-deep shelves for folded clothes.
For walk-in closets, measure each wall run separately and add the runs together. Reach-in closets are usually 4â8 ft wide; anything over 8 ft works better with a center divider and doors on each side.

Closet calculator FAQ
About 3â4 feet of rod per person â 2â3 ft for short items (shirts, jackets) and 1â2 ft for long items (coats, dresses). Double rods double the short-hanging space in the same footprint.
Upper shelf at 84 in, shirt rod at 62â66 in, lower rod at 40â42 in, and shelves about 12 in deep. Adjust the shirt rod to your height: it should sit about 8â10 in above the folded-hanging clearance.
12 inches for folded clothes and standard bins; 16 in for large baskets or bulky sweaters. Shoe shelves work at 12 in deep with 7â8 in of vertical clearance per row.
A double rod stacks two short-hanging rods (upper 62â66 in, lower 40â42 in), roughly doubling capacity in the same width. Use it for shirts, pants and folded items; keep a separate single rod for long garments.
Plan on 4â6 sq ft of shelf area per person plus 3â4 ft of rod each. A 2-person 6-ft closet with double rods and two shelves usually covers it; add bins for seasonal overflow.
