Sheets needed
How backer board count is estimated
- Net sheets = area / sheet area (15 sq ft for 3x5, 18 for 3x6, 7.5 for half sheet).
- Total sheets = net x (1 + waste/100), rounded up.
- Waste covers the L-cuts around niches, valves and fixtures, plus the 1/8-in gap you must leave at every joint.
Unlike drywall, cement board is heavy and hard to cut - a sheet can weigh 50-60 lb. Ordering one or two extra is far cheaper than running out mid-shower, and the offcuts patch small areas if you pre-plan the layout.

Approximate 3x5 sheet counts at 10% waste.
| Project | Typical area | 3x5 sheets | 3x6 sheets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bathroom backsplash | 25-35 sq ft | 3 | 2-3 |
| Shower surround | 60-90 sq ft | 5-7 | 4-6 |
| Bathroom floor (50 sq ft) | 50 sq ft | 4 | 3-4 |
| Laundry room floor (80 sq ft) | 80 sq ft | 6-7 | 5-6 |
Last updated: October 2026 · Counts assume full sheets, standard 1/8-in joints and 10% layout waste. Niche liners and bench tops add a bit more.
Backer board FAQ
No. Cement board is a rigid, water-resistant panel made for tile; drywall softens and degrades in wet areas. For showers and floors, tile must go over a proper substrate - cement backer, foam board or a membrane system.
Score with a carbide scoring tool and snap, like drywall but firmer, or use a diamond blade for curves. Cut panels face-up with a straightedge; round holes (pipes) are easiest with a hole saw after the panel is mounted.
Use approved backer-board screws (often self-tapping, coated) on 8-in centers along framing. Tape every joint with alkali-resistant mesh tape embedded in thin-set - regular drywall tape corrodes against cement board.
Yes - feather thin-set over taped joints so the wall reads flat before tile. Large-format tile will reveal any 1/16-in ridge, so check with a straightedge across every seam before you start tiling.
Only with a crack-isolation membrane and a very rigid double-layer subfloor. The reliable path is cement board (or a foam tile base) - it isolates tile from wood movement and is what most manufacturers' warranties expect.
